One of the most significant impacts of the digital age on Loy Krathong is the growing awareness of environmental concerns. Traditional krathongs made from banana leaves and flowers can pollute waterways when they decompose. To address this issue, many people are opting for eco-friendly alternatives, such as krathongs made from biodegradable materials or even virtual krathongs. Digital platforms have also played a crucial role in promoting environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable practices during the festival. Social media campaigns, educational videos, and online petitions have raised awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and have inspired people to make eco-friendly choices.

Some innovative companies have introduced augmented reality (AR) features that allow people to create virtual krathongs and release them into their own surroundings through their phones. Users can design and decorate their krathongs with virtual flowers, candles, and incense before sending them off in a digital stream, river, or ocean right from their living rooms. These AR experiences offer an engaging way for younger generations to connect with the tradition in a fun, interactive manner.
